Why Edibles Take Longer—and Last Longer

With edibles, “nothing’s happening” can be a misleading first impression. Swallowed cannabis takes a different route through the body from inhaled cannabis—and that changes both the timing and the experience.

A different journey through the body

When cannabis is inhaled, THC passes through the lungs into the bloodstream, with effects beginning within seconds to minutes.

When swallowed, it must first pass through the digestive system. The liver converts some THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, an active compound that contributes to the intoxicating effects. This helps explain why an edible can feel different from smoking or vaping.

The quiet beginning can be deceptive

Edible effects commonly begin within 30 minutes to two hours, but it can take up to four hours to feel their full effects.

Taking more because the first portion seems inactive can mean several portions taking effect together later. A delayed response does not mean the product has failed.

Why the effects last longer

Edible effects can last up to 12 hours, with some residual effects lasting up to 24 hours. These are general ranges, not a personal timetable or a guarantee that someone is safe to drive afterward.

The amount consumed, individual biology, food and other substances can influence the experience. Familiarity with smoking does not reliably predict how an edible will affect you.

Read the amount, not just the portion

Check the labelled THC content per piece and per package. One sweet or one serving is not a standard dose across different products.

Avoid combining cannabis with alcohol. Do not drive or operate machinery while impaired, and speak to a healthcare professional about possible interactions if you take medication.

Store edibles securely in their labelled packaging, away from children and pets. Their resemblance to ordinary food makes careful storage especially important.

The forest can wait. Understanding the delay is part of understanding edibles.
